How To Use Google To Save Money

by heather on October 25, 2008

We all know that coupons save money.  What else is new, right?

Well, if you’ve ever searched for online coupons you know how tedious it can be.  You can spend hours on the Internet, sifting through junk and outdated offers looking for coupons you can use right now.  I can think of a whole host of other things I’d rather be doing, and I’m sure you could too.

If you harness the power of Google, however, you can save all this time and frustration by making the coupons you want come to you.

The trick is to use “Google Alerts“.

Google Alerts is a nifty tool that allows you to sign up for news updates on just the topics you’re interested in.  So, if you’re interested in, say, Hamburger Helper coupons, then you’d sign up for a Google Alert using the keywords “Hamburger Helper coupons”.  Every time Hamburger Helper put out a new online coupon, you’d get an email alert in your mailbox, along with a link taking you right to it.

You can sign up for tons of different Google Alerts (click here to go right to the Google Alert page).

Some of the keyword combinations you could use to sign up are:

  •  ”Your Favorite Store” coupon (stores like Gap, Pier One, etc.)
  • “Your Favorite Product” coupon (Fiber One, Barillo noodles, ect.)
  • “Your Favorite Restaurant” coupon (bigger chains, like Applebees or Wendy’s, work best)

You can also use keywords like sale, clearance, free sample, or promotional code in conjunction with your primary keywords to widen the search.

Now, I wish I could take credit for this awesome tip, but fellow personal finance blogger Money Ning came up with it.  So, kudos to you for this great idea!

By signing up for Google Alerts you no longer have to spend hours searching for online coupons and deals.  Once you pick the companies or products you want, the online coupons will come straight to you.
