Packing peanuts just might be the bane of the holiday season. One of them anyway.
Here’s the good news, however. If you’re looking for a frugal holiday decorating tip, then packing peanuts make the best holiday garland!
Simply get a thick needle and thread them up just as you would popcorn. Super easy, super eco-friendly, and super free.
After the holidays, make sure you recycle your packing peanuts. You can visit The Plastic Loose Fill Council to find a drop off site. Also, most mailing businesses like the UPS store will take packing peanuts to reuse in their shipments.
Happy eco-decorating!

I’m with you on the packing peanuts. Terrible for the environment. I didn’t know they could be recycled, so thanks for the info!
Squawkfox,
Thanks for writing in! It’s amazing how many tons of these packing peanuts end up in landfills every year simply because people aren’t aware they can be recycled.
People can also visit Earth911.com to find a local recycling center that will take packing peanuts as well.

I just read a great tip – you can use plain popcorn instead of packing peanuts and then the receiver can leave it out for the birds! I’m glad you pointed out they could be recycled though – I didn’t realize that
Heidi,
Thanks so much for writing that in! That is a great tip.
