MI Residents: Rain Barrels for $54!

by heather on February 16, 2009

Yeah, that’s not a typo. If you live in Southeast Michigan, you can get an awesome rain barrel for $54.

Here’s the scoop…

Last year I contacted a man I found on Craigslist named George Nowsch. He lives in Western Michigan, and makes these really awesome rain barrels that he sells to people all over the state. Anyway, I wanted one but it turns out I’d just missed his last trek to the Southeast MI, so I ended up making my own.

Well, he’s coming down to Ann Arbor with a whole trailer full of rain barrels for sale. He’ll be there on March 21st.

I have to admit that his rain barrels are nicer than the one I made on my own. His have spouts already installed at the bottom. And, from someone living with a spoutless rain barrel all last summer, let me tell you they would come in handy.

Rain barrels like this normally go for $100 to $200 online. So if you live in Southeast Michigan and want to start harvesting your rainwater for your yard or garden, you need to contact him soon to let him know you want one.

His ad, which he’s posted on Craigslist, can be seen here.

And, here’s what his rain barrels look like:

Trust me, you’re getting a bargain here. If I was going to be in town I’d buy two more for my house. I love my rain barrel! It really kept my water bill down last summer, and I loved not letting all that rainwater go to waste.

George can be contacted through his Craigslist ad, or you can email him at: geobuildit@yahoo.com

He’s also in the process of building a solar shower out of the same materials, so if you’re interested in one of those let him know. Again, he’ll be driving down on March 21 so don’t wait on this; he’s only got so much room in his trailer.

Happy harvesting!

Thanks for the note, as I live in Ann Arbor. Can you give us a little more info. on rainwater usage? Do you filter it before using it? Is it drinkable (I think not) or do you only use it for watering plants, cleaning, etc.? Thanks!

Scentualsoundtracks,

Thanks for writing in!

I’m planning to post an article on rainwater collection soon since spring is coming up.

I’m sure you could drink your rainwater if you steam distilled it. I collected my own rainwater all last summer, and I can tell you it’s kind of yucky once it comes off the roof. I only use mine to water my flowers and lawn. So unless you were desperate, I wouldn’t advise drinking it.

Getting a rain barrel with a lid is vital, otherwise mosquitos will breed in there and it will be a mess.

George’s rain barrels look very well made to me, and they’re definitely worth the $54.

Thanks again for reading and writing in!
