By the time you read this I will have been up for hours, staring at rolling fields, roadside antique stands, and drinking tons of coffee out of my Sigg thermos.
Why, you ask?
Because I’m on vacation!
A and I will be gone for the next 10 days, taking a road trip down to Asheville, NC, and then over to the Outer Banks. I’ll try to post and respond to comments while I’m away, but if I’m a bit slow that’s why!
In celebration of happy summertime bliss, I wanted to post my 13 Happies List.
This is a list of simple things that make me devastatingly happy.
Heather’s 13 Happies List
- Vintage bicycles
- Luscious Etsy treasures
- The sound of raindrops on the roof
- Dancing in barefeet
- Chalkboard paint
- Tree swings
- 3 day weekends
- Cupcakes with sprinkles
- S’Mores
- Really good thunderstorms
- Old photobooths
- Origami
- Walking in the rain with colorful rain boots and a great umbrella
Just writing these things down is enough to make me happy. And, I think these little things are what make life so grand.
And, it would sure be easy to keep going. I think I could make a list of 100 Happies in a flash (Blueberries! Old quilts! Windy days! Opening a fresh bag of coffee! Daisies! Twirling in a skirt! Strawberry Shortcake!)
I’ve often thought of making a giant poster of Happies for those Not-So-Happy days. It’d be nice to decorate it and hang it up in my office…
Your 13 Happy List…
So, what about your favorite loves? What simple things would you put on your Happy List? Please send them in! I would love to read them while I’m away. And, I’m sure that sharing Happy Lists would make other people happy to read them!

Oh, my gosh! You will be coming right by me on your way from Asheville to the OBX! If you have time and want to stretch your legs, stop in and see me at Riverbend Park (exit 132 on I-40, then 8 miles north on HWY 16). I read your blog daily and have learned so much from you! Hope you have a great time here in NC!
Great list. I’d add this one: 2 week vacation (or how I like to think of it: 1/2 month … sounds longer) on the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks Revealed
Have a great vacation! You’ll be passing right by me, no doubt; give a wave toward Raleigh if you think of it.
What a great list. I created my own and posted it on my blog at http://meinmillions.blogspot.com/2009/07/happy-list.html. Hope you have a wonderful vacation!
You guys are so sweet! We actually used to live in Asheville before we moved to MI, so it’s like coming home when we’re here. It’s truly wonderful to be back. The community here is so green and funky, and the neighborhood where we used to live (downtown West Asheville) is actually MORE green than when we were here last!
Already I’ve seen an Eco-Friendly Car Mechanic (yes, that’s the name of his business), a woman who started a Sustainable Paint company, an Eco-Friendly Housing company, and 5+ reuse/consignment stores. And, that’s just in downtown West Asheville!
Just found your website – I look forward to exploring it. Make sure you visit Manteo while on the Outer Banks – I’m in sales at Marshes Light, a new neighborhood based on WALKABILITY. I do have an small electric car (more like a golf cart) that is allowed on roads with maximum speed limit of 35mph. So it you see me driving about, please say hello.
What a great idea, Heather. Here’s my list:
1. Water — swimming in it, looking at it, it doesn’t matter to me.
2. Ice Cream.
3. Cuddling up with my twin 3 year old daughters after bath-time.
4. Books and more books.
5. Tomatoes straight from the garden.
6. Bare feet on sand.
7. Ditto on the thunderstorms.
8. The smell of bread baking.
9. Lying down and looking at the clouds with my girls. We come up with different things the clouds look like.
10. Really good coffee.
11. Cold beer on a summer evening.
12. Laughing with family and friends at silly things.
13. Watching the way my children are learning to make sense of the world.
Hi Heather, hope you enjoy Asheville – you just missed Bele Chere. I used to live in MI, but like it much better down here in the mountains 🙂 Have a great vacation!
Oh Beth, that is a FANTASTIC list.
The coffee I’ve gotten hooked on is Newman’s Own Organic. It’s what McDonald’s is now using for their regular coffee, and it is SO GOOD. Smooth and very flavorful.
I love tomatoes fresh from the garden too! I’m growing my own this year (yellow and red cherry tomatoes, and husky reds) and have gotten into the habit of just eating them like popcorn. They’re so good!
Marie,
Yeah, we couldn’t make it back in time for Bele Chere. But that’s ok! I’m looking forward to hitting all my old haunts (Malaprop’s bookstore, Screen Door, Tupelo Honey for fried green tomatoes…YUM) Last night we hit Lucky Otter for burritos and margaritas.
I’m so happy to be back here!
I’m smiling, Heather — about 4 months ago I switched to nothing but Newman’s Own Organic coffee. I do love it! We’re growing tomatoes this year, too — heirlooms from seed. YUM! Have a great vacation.
Marie…
Thank you, thank you. I have been wondering what brand of coffee McDonald’s has been using. That is absolutely my favorite coffee. I am in Arkansas and have not seen Newman’s coffee in the local markets. What store are you purchasing from?
Neko
I have one happy right now. I just bought my own domain name.
OK, three happies, I guess.
1. Finally bought my own domain name (ecokaren)
2. Have been working tirelessly to move my blog to the new url. (old one is ecogeneration)
3. Opened a second Etsy shop with the same name.
And even though I rather be vacationing, I can’t wait until everything is set up so that I can enjoy a few days off…even if it means, just sleeping.
Have a great vacation Heather!
How fun! I am new here, and love what I’ve seen of your blog – just subscribed. I posted my Happy List on my blog: http://picnicbasketcrafts.blogspot.com/2009/08/okay-i-was-inspired-by-happy-list-at.html
@ecoKaren- That’s great you just bought your own domain; congratulations!
@Tiffany- Thanks so much for reading! I loved your “rain on the tent” happy. I love that too! The sound of rain hitting a tent roof when you’re all cozy inside is the best. 🙂
