When it comes to natural home remedies, honey just might be the end-all, be-all of medicines. When done right, honey can help cure all kinds of ailments, from sinus infections to sleeplessness.
Surprised? I sure was. Until a friend clued me in last week, I had no idea honey was anything more than my favorite sweetener. But, this sweet treat is actually used in several holistic remedies. And, human beings have been using it for thousands of years to cure common problems.
So, let’s take a look at the amazing benefits of honey, and how we can use it to save money and cure common ailments naturally at home.
1. Cure A Cough and Sore Throat With Honey
Instead of buying over the counter cough medicine, use honey!
The Guardian UK published a study that compared honey to dextromethorphan, an ingredient in several commercial cough medicines.
What did the study find?
The team from Pennsylvania State University report today in the Archives of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine that honey was more effective than dextromethorphan at relieving the severity, frequency and bothersome nature of the cough. The medicine was slightly more effective than no treatment at all.
You can also make a soothing concoction for your sore throat with honey. Health911 recommends making a mixture of honey and lemon juice, and swallowing 2 tablespoons every two hours.
2. Cure An Upset Stomach With Honey
Associated Content has this recipe to for curing an upset stomach with honey.
Try honey and vinegar. Before you turn up your nose at this combination, it really isn’t bad when mixed with ice-cold apple juice. Simply mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a tablespoon of honey, and mix it with one cup of ice-cold apple juice. This concoction tastes like delicious apple cider, and it will help alleviate minor sinus and stomach ailments.
3. Soothe Burns With Honey
Woman’s Day Magazine reports that honey works great on minor burns. If it’s serious, of course, you need to head to the doctor.
Simply smear honey on the burn. The study they reference in the magazine reports that this could make the burn heal up to five days faster than other methods of treatment.
4. Heal Open or Infected Wounds With Honey
Honey is antibacterial, and it can be used to not only treat open wounds, but kill off bacteria that has settled into existing wounds.
The National Honey Board published this abstract from a study done by several doctors, on the sterilization properties of honey:
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of honey as a treatment of neonatal post-operative wound infection. Nine infants with large, open infected wounds that had failed to heal with conventional intravenous antibiotic treatment (and cleaning the wound with chlorhexidine 0.05% W/V in aqueous solution and fusidic acid ointment) were treated with 5-10 ml of commercial, unprocessed , non-pasteurized and non-irradiated honey.
The dressing was changed twice daily and the appearance of the wound and surrounding tissues were recorded. All infants showed marked clinical improvement after 5 d of treatment and the wounds were closed, clean and sterile in all infants after 21 d of honey application. There were no adverse reactions to the treatment. The authors concluded that honey could be useful in the treatment of post-surgical wounds that are infected and do not respond to conventional systemic and local antibiotic treatment.

If you’re going to treat wounds with honey (or just keep it in your medicine cabinet for emergencies), then it’s important to get quality, unprocessed honey.
See, most commercial honey is treated by heat, which destroys a good part of honey’s antibacterial properties. The rawer the honey, the better it’s going to be for you, and your wounds!
5. Cure Acne With Honey
This is another remedy that really requires unprocessed honey. If you have some, however, you can smear it on your face to help get rid of acne.
World of Honey recommends smearing it on your face (or just your acne spots). Wait 15 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.
